PLATELET RICH PLASMA + DERMAPEN (ALOPECIA)
Hair loss (alopecia) is one of the most frequent cases in aesthetic medicine. This is a medical condition that requires proper medical diagnosis to select the best treatment. There are medical advances in alopecia treatment that should be discussed carefully and evaluated from a scientific point of view, to clearly differentiate the multiple and ineffective “magic treatments” that exist for alopecia.
An example of a major advancement in alopecia treatment is regarding cell therapy investigations, which are already being applied in treatment of hair loss and has produced good results. This includes the platelet-rich plasma combined with growth factors presented in Dermapen as a treatment.
In recent studies, the platelet-rich plasma (also called “PRP”) is revolutionary in various fields of medicine, such as sports medicine, aesthetic medicine and ulcer treatment. Now it is being combined and applied with Dermapen and has shown to be a revolutionary treatment in the aesthetic field, which as a whole has been utilized in treating alopecia and produced good results.
WHAT IS TREATMENT USING BOTH DERMAPEN AND PRP?
This new technique involves intradermal injection of growth factors – active proteins produced by human cells that are found in greater proportions in platelets. It is a protein complex derived from platelet-rich plasma obtained from the patient by blood collection and subsequent centrifugation. Subsequent to obtaining the PRP, the doctor first applies Dermapen, producing an initial stimulation and activation of scalp cells and hair follicles, then PRP subsequently is applied to the scalp through microinjections directly into the area where thinning and/or hair loss is observed. Growth Factors Platelet Rich Plasma activates the hair root, improving hair quality and ceasing its loss.
The PRP applied is an autologous PRP prepared with the patient’s own blood in a sterile method. It is discarded if allergy risks or disease transmission are presented. It does not require any special preparation on the patient’s behalf before treatment. It is performed in a medical office with an outpatient method. The entire procedure takes about 60 minutes. After treatment, the patient can continue with his/her normal lives, respecting a designated recovery time.
The amount and frequency of sessions varies according to each case. In general, we recommend one session per month for three consecutive months. Depending on the results, it is advisable to repeat some maintenance sessions at 3, 4 or 6 months after completion of initial treatment.
WHAT EVIDENCE SHOWS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PRP + DERMAPEN IN ALOPECIA TREATMENT?
Throughout the past year, some scientific publications have been reported in which the authors show the relationship between PRP + Dermapen for alopecia and its beneficial results.
IS THE PROCEDURE SAFE?
It is an extremely safe procedure, since the PRP and growth factors used are autologous; in other words, the patient provides them for their own treatment (patient’s blood is withdrawn and sent to provide a portion of their own growth factors). This method is beneficial due to the patient providing their own growth factors. Growth factors are specific to each individual tissue, which makes this system a personalized treatment, avoiding the risk of infection or allergic reactions, and eliminates issues with compatibility.
Regarding Dermapen, it is a safe treatment with minimal side effects: possible reactions are redness and mild bleeding that occurs under the skin and is unnoticeable.
Treatment is fully compatible with other treatments for alopecia as monoxide or finasteride.
WHAT IS THE ROLE OF PRP + DERMAPEN IN ALOPECIA TREATMENT TODAY?
We can say that the platelet rich plasma (PRP) and the accompanying treatment Dermapen are promising in treating baldness.
